Sustainable Events ISO20121

What do your events say about your risk?

YOUR VALUES ARE DIFFERENTIATORS in a crowded marketplace.  You want  potential clients to know that you will enhance their value chain — not add a liability.

But do your events communicate how seriously you take your impact on planet, people and profit?  When it comes to sustainability, Contented can help you prove that you walk your talk, with an internationally-recognised certificate and a quality mark you can display on all your marketing collateral.

How events earned their stripes

Developed by the events sector for the Olympic Games in London 2012, ISO20121 is a standard specifically for venues and suppliers to demonstrate that they make a difference to society through knowledge transfer or legacy projects.  After its launch there was evidence that the standard was in further demand outside the UK.

The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) has designed this to provide a framework to develop your own management system based on the issues that are relevant to you.  Our own processes are designed to generate evidence that you can use to reassure an external auditor.

How does the ISO define sustainability?

Operating sustainably means working in a balanced way, identifying and improving areas where we impact negatively society, the environment and the economy — it’s important to remember that all three of these areas are interlinked.  Without an environment, there can be no society; without a society there can be no economy.  British Standards Institute defines sustainability as “an enduring and balanced approach to economic activity, environmental responsibility and social progress”.

How can you earn the standard?

In the context of this definition of sustainability, ISO 20121 requires us to:

  • Identify our challenges in supporting or managing events
  • Outline our commitments in a policy
  • Develop SMART objectives
  • Train our staff
  • Engage our suppliers
  • Develop a communications plan
  • Monitor and measure our successes
  • Audit and review our documents
