About this initiative
This initiative creates social value by connecting experienced practitioners with students and early-career professionals interested in sustainability, ESG and Social Value.
Participating practitioners contribute their time, knowledge and professional insight through structured interviews and discussions. These contributions help learners develop their understanding of real-world challenges, strengthen their professional networks and improve their employability.
The initiative forms part of an ongoing programme led by Contented ESG in collaboration with the University of Birmingham. Through applied research, learning and knowledge exchange, the programme aims to create value for learners, participating organisations and the wider sectors in which they operate.
Contented ESG records and reports these contributions through a structured process designed to provide transparent, proportionate and evidence-based recognition of social impact. Participating organisations may use their Record of Social Impact Contribution as supporting evidence within their own social value, sustainability and procurement reporting processes.
Activity Summary
This initiative forms part of an Applied Research Programme on Sustainability, ESG and Social Value. Through structured interviews, experienced practitioners share sector knowledge, practical experience and professional insight with students and early-career professionals.
The programme supports learning, employability and knowledge exchange by providing access to practitioners working within transport, infrastructure and related supply chains. Contributions typically involve a structured interview and a proportionate contribution of senior professional time.
The beneficiary of the activity is the participating learner or early-career professional, while participating organisations contribute specialist knowledge, experience and professional insight.
Activity: Structured practitioner interview
Programme: Applied Research Programme on Sustainability, ESG and Social Value
Contribution: Sector knowledge, professional insight and employability guidance
Evidence: Interview duration, learner support and individually referenced record
Intended Outcomes
This initiative was designed to address a recognised barrier faced by many students and early-career professionals: limited access to experienced practitioners working in regulated sectors and complex supply chains. Many are forced to limit research to published secondary research that may have taken a year or more to peer-review and publish and is consequently outdated. Most students do not have the social networks, knowledge and confidence to secure interviews with senior employers.
Through structured interviews and knowledge exchange, participants gain exposure to real-world perspectives on sustainability, ESG and Social Value. The initiative aims to strengthen professional confidence, improve research and communication skills, expand professional networks and increase understanding of how sustainability challenges are addressed in practice.
For participating organisations, the initiative creates an opportunity to support learning, employability and knowledge exchange through a relatively small contribution of professional time and expertise.
Evidence of Impact
Evidence gathered through the pilot phase indicates that participation helped learners move beyond theoretical understanding towards a more practical and applied appreciation of sustainability, ESG and Social Value.
Reflection completed by participants identified increased confidence, stronger analytical capability and a better understanding of how sustainability challenges are addressed within organisations and supply chains.
The initiative also created opportunities for reciprocal learning. Participating organisations reported that interview discussions prompted reflection on their own sustainability and social value practices, creating value both for learners and practitioners.
As the programme develops, additional participant feedback, case studies and outcomes will be added to this page to provide a broader picture of the social impact being created through the initiative.
Participant Outcomes
Evidence gathered during the pilot phase identified positive outcomes for the participating students and early-career professionals.
Through engagement with experienced practitioners, participants reported exposure to real-world perspectives on sustainability, ESG and Social Value, helping bridge the gap between academic study and professional practice. Reflection completed following the project indicated increased confidence, stronger analytical capability and a deeper understanding of how sustainability challenges are addressed within organisations and supply chains.
The initiative also supported the development of professional research, communication and networking skills. As a direct result of the placement experience and capability demonstrated through the project, the individuals were subsequently offered employment, providing evidence of a tangible employability outcome.
These outcomes reflect real change rather than activity completion and are consistent with the principles of Social Value International, which emphasise the importance of evidencing outcomes that matter to stakeholders.
Contribution and Proportionality
Contributions by participating organisations are designed to be proportionate and low burden, typically involving a structured interview and a relatively small amount of senior professional time.
No financial contribution is required. Participation is voluntary and focused on learning, knowledge exchange and employability rather than promotion or marketing.
The initiative demonstrates how a modest contribution of professional expertise can help create meaningful social value by supporting the development of students and early-career professionals while strengthening connections between education and industry.
Contented ESG seeks to recognise these contributions transparently and proportionately through the issue of Social Impact Records and supporting evidence.
Framework Alignment
This initiative has been designed to support reporting across recognised social value, sustainability and procurement frameworks.
Contributions made through practitioner interviews primarily support outcomes relating to skills development, employability, knowledge exchange and stakeholder engagement. These outcomes are aligned with frameworks commonly used by public sector organisations, infrastructure clients and supply chains.
The initiative is particularly relevant to:
- UK Social Value Model (PPN 002; PPN 026), including Skills for Growth and Fair Work outcomes.
- Social Value Portal (National TOMs).
- Rail Social Value Tool (RSVT), including careers guidance, skills development and stakeholder engagement measures.
- Social Value International (SVI) principles-based reporting.
- United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Quality Education, Decent Work and Economic Growth, Industry Innovation and Infrastructure, and Partnerships for the Goals.
- Evidence-based reporting
Through this alignment, participating organisations can better understand how relatively small contributions of time, knowledge and expertise can support wider social value objectives and create positive outcomes for learners and future professionals.
Downloads and supporting evidence
This page forms part of an ongoing programme of social value reporting, evidence gathering and impact assessment. Supporting documents and reports are provided to help participating organisations understand the initiative, review the evidence base and access additional information where appropriate.
These resources are intended to provide transparency, support evidence-based reporting and help participating organisations understand how contributions of time, knowledge and expertise can create positive social value outcomes.

Looking ahead
This initiative is intended to grow over time as additional practitioners, organisations and learners participate in the programme.
Future updates will include additional participant reflections, case studies, impact reports and evidence illustrating how knowledge exchange, employability support and professional engagement contribute to positive social value outcomes. The programme will continue to develop its evidence base through transparent, proportionate and outcomes-focused reporting.
